A Mask

A Mask   
You don't know what I have had to do   
I've hidden myself behind a mask   
Knitted of hatred and sorrow and pain   
A kind of mask   
That is thin   
And knobbly   
And not always easy to hold   
Trust me,   
I have been broken before   
My heart has been torn in two   
My soul   
Is full of holes   
Wounds that I can never heal   
Trust me   
I have suffered more   
Than you can even

Who am I to say
I know my heart's
deepest desires?

To say I know
why my heart
beats out this endless melody?

Who am I
to say
I know what everyone wishes for?

Who am I to know
what deepest secrets and longings
lie within the heart?

What do I know
about this tireless muscle
scientifically?

To say I know
each individual piece of tissue
that makes up the heart?

What do I know
about the heart's reason for working
so religiously?

Do I see a source of strength
a way to go on
to climb the hardest path and survive?

I don't know.
Who am I to say
that I know what others want...

When I don't even know
my own heart's
deepest desires?
